In September 2017, archaeological excavations in the gardens of Cluny Abbey revealed an incredible monetary treasure : more than 2,200 Cluniac silver denarii and obols and 21 gold dinars. This is the first time that such a treasure has been found in an enclosed area! The tour of Cluny Abbey has been extended to include a permanent exhibition of this exceptional archaeological treasure.

"Cluny Abbey and the network of Cluniac sites" Abbey cellar
From the Middle Ages to the present day, from Scotland to Spain and from Portugal to Poland, the monks of Cluny have developed a formidable network of over 2,000 sites. With its influence on the religious and cultural life of society at the time, on the shaping of European cities and on political thought, Cluny made a decisive contribution to the emergence ofmodern Europe. For all these reasons, the European Federation of Cluniac Sites has been working since 2018 to have their cultural heritage listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, attend the rehearsals of the Ensemble Masques, conducted by harpsichordist Olivier Fortin, at the Farinier in Cluny Abbey. Renowned as much for its expressiveness and vitality as for its integrity and precision, the Ensemble Masques fully embodies the multiplicity of the Baroque spirit. The core members of the ensemble each have careers as soloists and performers with prestigious international early music ensembles. They are regularly joined by other instrumentalists who share the same desire to bring out the full expressive potential of the repertoire they play. Further information: ensemblemasques.org
